Tender writing
Tender writing really is an art, and one most people dislike! Mainly beause you’re made to jump through hoops, unnecessarily in my opinion.
Over the years I have produced many successful tenders, and have the ability to decipher exactly what is being asked for, answer the brief in a clear and concise way, collate all the relevant evidence and work with specific members of the team to present visuals and deliver the tender in the format required to the deadline specified.
At Glasgows, one of my core responsibilities was sourcing and writing tenders, and I was instrumental in the successful inclusion of Glasgows onto the preferred suppliers rosters for 3-7 years for many government departments and agencies, including:
- LOCOG (the London Committee for the Olympic Games)
- The Home Office
- The Department of Health
- The Central Office of Information
- The Department of Transport
- The Health and Safety Executive
- The Department for Education
- The Northwest Development Agency
- The Homes and Communities Agency
- The NHS Institute for Innovation and Improvement
- Northwest Business Link
Answer the brief
It’s all too easy to detail everything you are capable of doing, instead of answering their actual brief.
This will result in your tender being marked down for not delivering what is requested.
It is crucial to read everything carefully and only provide what is being asked for.
I will work with you to ensure you only deliver what the tender requires.
Plan
It’s crucial to plan carefully to deliver a winning tender.
Tenders take time to produce and have many elements to them:
- Ask questions within the dates specified
- Gather the relevant credentials
- Brief the design team on any required visuals
- Be creative in your writing
- Draft, check, amend and proof the tender
- Allow yourself breathing time
I would manage all of the above elements to ensure the right team is in place to deliver a successful tender on time.
Presentation
In some cases you will be asked to present your tender to the client team.
This needs to be prepared carefully and most crucially the most appropriate team chosen to pitch to the client.
That may not necessarily be the team that wrote it, but those that can deliver a concise and engaging presentation, giving you the best chance of winning the project.
