As a little girl I could get lost in books and magazines for hours.
On one occasion when I was really quite young, I decided I would lighten my hair. I was so engrossed in my magazine that I forgot to keep an eye on the time. Much to my horror….
My hair turned blonde!
I quickly ran down the stairs to the phone in the hallway (no mobile phones in those days) with a towel wrapped around my head and asked my friend to buy any dye that said “black” on it and to come as quickly as possible to my house.
To avoid the wrath of my mother, I subsequently spent weeks and weeks colouring my hair black until the bleach finally grew out. To this day I still don’t know if she actually knew what had happened.…. I think I may have to ask her.
